I.M.A., Interacting Mothers with Allergic Children, is a support group for mothers of children living with food allergies, eczema, and asthma. It was founded in January, 2003, by two mothers of allergic children, Blimie Frank and Beverly Israel, and it is based in Brooklyn N.Y.
I.M.A. meets monthly at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Featured speakers have included Dr. Steven Shelov, Chairman of Pediatrics, MMC; Dr. Scott Sicherer, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Jaffe Food Allergy Institute, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine; Dr. Michael Marcus, Director of Pediatric Pulmonology, MMC; and other distinguished representatives of the medical establishment and the local community. The mailing list currently at 200 members, I.M.A. offers guidance and support to mothers of children who have just been diagnosed with food allergies. I.M.A.'s primary goal is to teach community schools about allergy awareness and the potentially life-threatening consequences of ignoring this most serious issue.
